Wassenaar Warriors shine at United World Games in Austria

From 18 to 21 June, Klagenfurt, Austria, was the stage for the United World Games, one of Europe’s largest international youth sporting events. Thousands of young athletes from around the world gathered to compete and celebrate sport. Among them was a proud delegation from Wassenaar Warriors International Rugby Club.

Together with players from Voorburgse Rugby Club and several guest players, the young athletes proudly represented the Netherlands at the Rugby Sevens tournament, competing across three age categories: U14, U16, and U18.

The tournament gave the players the opportunity to test themselves against international teams they rarely meet in the Dutch competition. Rugby Sevens, a fast-paced version of rugby with seven players per side, demands speed, fitness, teamwork, and quick decision-making.

The Dutch teams showed that they can compete at a high level. The girls, who normally play in mixed teams with boys in the Dutch competition, had the opportunity to compete in an all-girls tournament in Austria. The U16 girls delivered an outstanding performance, proudly securing the gold medal.

The U14 and U16 Boys teams also delivered strong performances. Both teams reached the final and returned home with well-deserved silver medals.

More than just rugby
The United World Games were about much more than just the results on the field. Between matches, the players enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere of Klagenfurt and formed new friendships along the way. The shared experiences, both on and off the pitch, made the trip truly memorable for everyone involved, including the coaches and parents who attended.

A special year for the Warriors
The successful trip to Austria was a memorable highlight in an already special season for the club. This year, Wassenaar Warriors, formerly known as BSN Rugby, are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

With a growing youth section, the launch a Senior Men’s team, and international experiences like the United World Games, the club continues to show that rugby in Wassenaar is thriving. After 50 years of history, the Warriors are looking ahead to an exciting future.
