Dickens’ A Christmas Carol 19, 20 en 21 dec: 80 years after it was first published and still relevant today!
Wassenaar, Theater Warenar – With thanks to the Sint Nicolaas Gasthuis Foundation “An excellent lead-in to Christmas and one which should remind us that it is a time not only for giving but perhaps more importantly, of goodwill to all.” Michael Hasted – Arts Talk Magazine. This all time Christmas favourite was first published in London on 19 December 1843. After 180 years the message still stands today.
By British Masterstoryteller Ashley Ramsden and the Plumpudding Singers
Charles Dickens' novel, "A Christmas Carol" (1843), is the famous redemption tale of the wicked Ebenezer Scrooge. On Christmas Eve Scrooge is visited by spirits, including his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. Each ghost imparts a message unto Scrooge: His penny-pinching and indifference to those in need affects himself and others who care about him.
By the end of the story, Scrooge understands this and vows to change his mean, miserly ways before it is too late. "I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach."
Can we still learn from this wise tale? Is it possible in a world that seems to be more divided than ever to share, live together and listen to one another? The gap between the haves and have-nots widens and the difference in what is true and not-true is no longer distinguishable. This story brings it all down to the essence that we can only gain by sharing and considering the other. Ashley Ramsden will be joined on stage by the Plum Pudding Singers - a revered a-capella harmony quartet, who provide beautifully sung interludes throughout the show, lead by mezzo-soprano Maite Cathérine de Wit.
